10 July. The third general meeting of the Lithuanian Regional Waste Management Centres Association (LRWMA) took place in Kaunas on July 10. The meeting was chaired by the President of LRATCA, Director of the Šiauliai Regional Waste Management Centre Žilvinas Šilgalis.

During the meeting, the heads of the Regional Waste Management Centres and delegated representatives discussed current operational issues, planned the upcoming competency development trainings for specialists, and together with the representatives of WIDEN Legal discussed the amendments to the Law on Waste Management and their application in practice.

The second part of the meeting was devoted to a discussion with representatives of the packaging waste management organisations Žaliasis taškas and Gamtos ateitis. “Asta Burbaitė, Communications and Marketing Manager of Žaliasis taškas, presented the uniform sorting guidelines provided for in the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which are expected to help unify communication on waste management issues at national level.

Discussions focused on issues related to the sorting and financing of waste treated as secondary raw materials, as well as models for the management and financing of packaging waste in the mixed waste stream. Both sides agreed on the need to work together and find effective solutions to ensure that as much packaging waste as possible is sorted into its own containers rather than entering the mixed waste stream.

The next LRATCA General Assembly is scheduled for 2 October this year. Marijampolė.
